1960 파리, 유럽은 더 레이븐이라는 위대한 신사 도둑의 손아귀에 있게 된다. 그의 행적은 화려했으며 언제나 머리카락 하나도 피해를 입지 않고 현장을 빠져나갔다. 그러나 한 젊은 형사 니콜라스 레그랑이 이 마스터 도둑에 맞서며 치명적인 부상을 입힌다.
1964 런던, 스핑크스의 눈이라고 불리는 고대 적색 루비 보석이 박물관에서 도난을 당한다. 현장에는 더 레이븐이 사용하던 까마귀 깃털이 떨어져있다. 누군가가 마스터 도둑 더 레이븐을 따라한다고 생각한 레그랑은 이 새로운 사건을 담당하게 된다. 같은 시간 취리히에서는 야콥 젤너가 천장까지 높이 쌓인 문서들 너머로 고개를 든다. 불과 몇 백 미터 밖에 있는 은행 금고에 어떤 비밀이 숨겨져 있는지 모른 채 이제 곧 자신의 인생을 180도 바꿔놓을 전화 통화를 받게 된다.
